Gallery Visits
The exhibitions at the Longyear Museum of Anthropology and Picker Art Gallery are carefully conceived and selected to offer multiple points of connection to ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø’s liberal arts curriculum across a wide variety of disciplines. We encourage instructors to utilize our galleries to enhance curricular goals in all subject areas.
Class visits can include talks by exhibition curators, or they can be facilitated independently by the course instructor. Our curatorial team will work with you to craft a visit tailored to the learning goals of the course.
Please note that 4-6 weeks advance notice is necessary for class visits with exhibition curators.
Collections Visits
University Museums' permanent collections are available to all ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø faculty to enhance their teaching. Both the Longyear Museum of Anthropology and Picker Art Gallery offer rich resources for students to engage directly with original artworks and material culture, which enhance their ability to critically analyze images, visual information, and the physical world around them.
Our team is eager to help faculty access our collections and develop lessons that connect them to the wider liberal arts curriculum at ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø. View our collections, and for inspiration.
Please reach out as early in the semester as possible to schedule a collections visit.
Collaborating with University Museums
Our staff is often available to offer guest lectures and lessons in your regular classroom space. If you are interested in having exhibition curators or other staff members visit your class or you would like to speak with staff about potential collaborative opportunities such as exhibitions or class research projects, contact universitymuseums@colgate.edu.
Our Spaces
The Longyear Museum of Anthropology gallery can accommodate visits of up to 15 students. For larger classes, we can split the class into two groups to incorporate collections viewing and behind-the-scenes tours. We can also provide students with self-guided lessons and follow-up with classroom visits.
Longyear collections have been featured in the display cases of Alumni 111. Installations in Alumni 111 provide the opportunity for regular viewing of pieces discussed in class and potential for student-curated exhibitions. Significant coordination is required for projects in this classroom space, so we recommend beginning discussions a year in advance.
Picker Art Gallery is approximately 2,400 sq ft. and can accommodate classes of any size, although we recommend limiting class visits to about 30 students. The gallery is located on the 2nd floor of the Dana Arts Center.
The Picker Art Gallery collections study room is located in the Dana Arts Center, room 305. We are able to display up to 12 works from the collection in this space, depending on size. The room accommodates 12 students seated around our movable tables or 19 students seated theater style. The room also has a large monitor with bluetooth connectivity for instructor presentations.
