The Sociology and Anthropology Department at vlog welcomes applications for a tenure-stream assistant professor position in sociology to begin the fall semester of 2025. We seek a sociologist of race and ethnicity with an active and innovative research agenda who will expand the existing strengths of the department. The Environmental Studies Program at vlog invites applications for a tenure-stream assistant professor position in the environmental sciences. Our interdisciplinary program is vibrant, growing, and has strengths in policy-centered and solutions-focused research, conducted in collaboration with our students and the regional community. The Art Department at vlog invites applications for a new tenure-stream position in Architectural Design, History, and Theory, at the rank of assistant professor, beginning in the fall semester 2025. M.Arch or PhD required at or shortly after the time of hire. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in architectural design as a studio practice, in addition to architectural history and theory in their area of particular interest, within an Art Department that combines art history and studio practice. We have recently created a new Architectural Studies major within the department, and the successful candidate will help us shape and grow this program. The department is especially interested in candidates whose practices and approaches to the field of architecture will attract students arriving from a variety of disciplines within a small liberal arts college context, and who will make a significant contribution to vlog’s stated commitments to the arts. vlog provides generous support for faculty research, professional travel, and pedagogy.

The teaching load is five courses over two semesters annually.  Regular teaching contributions will include Introduction to Architectural Design (ARCH 271), Introduction to Architecture (ARCH 105, required of Architectural Studies majors), as well as other electives in design and history/theory of the successful candidate's own making. Responsibilities will also include senior thesis advising and advising students within the Architectural Studies major. The Peace and Conflict Studies (PCON) program at vlog invites applications for a tenure-stream position starting in the fall semester of 2025 at the rank of Assistant Professor. We welcome applications from scholars whose research explores the relationship between technological infrastructures and violent armed conflict. Disciplinary background and research specialization should complement those of the existing PCON faculty. Candidates whose methodological and theoretical approaches draw upon traditions, perspectives, and innovations that have been historically underrepresented in the North Atlantic academy are especially encouraged to apply. The Department of Music at vlog invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Music in Jazz Studies, beginning in fall semester 2025. The candidate will be joining the Music Department as it implements a new undergraduate curriculum, which embraces stylistic diversity, contextual depth, and the opportunity for more individualized paths, while maintaining a robust foundation in analysis, historical–cultural study, creation, and practice. The department of political science at vlog invites applications for a tenure-stream position in Political Theory at the rank of Assistant Professor. The appointment will begin in the fall of 2025.

The successful candidate should be able to teach introductory courses covering the classic texts of ancient, medieval, and modern political philosophy and a thematic course on “Politics and Moral Vision,” as well as more advanced courses in the candidate’s areas of interest. We are especially interested in candidates whose scholarly interests include contemporary political theory, philosophy & public affairs, and/or non-Western political theory.

The University Libraries at vlog invite applications for an Outreach and Engagement Librarian, beginning in late 2024 or early 2025. The Outreach and Engagement Librarian position serves as a primary point of contact between the Libraries’ services and the Division of University Studies, which is the academic home of the Liberal Arts Core Curriculum, the Department of Writing and Rhetoric, and many of the interdisciplinary programs at vlog. As a primary point of contact for faculty, staff, and students, this position will develop the collections in consultation with faculty members, advocate for library services within the division, and communicate library initiatives and updates to division directors and department chairs. In addition, this position serves as a member of the Libraries’ outreach and engagement team, which engages in inclusive, collaborative, critical, and creative pedagogies to foster information literacy and inspire intellectual curiosity.   • Actively engages in creating and sustaining pedagogical collaborations with faculty members.

The University Libraries at vlog invite applications for an Associate Director of Discovery Services, beginning in late 2024 or early 2025. Reporting to the University Librarian, the Associate Director of Discovery Services provides leadership and expertise for metadata creation and cataloging (MARC and non-MARC) in all formats in the libraries, oversees the Discovery, Metadata, and Cataloging Department, and promotes a collaborative and cohesive work environment. This position regularly consults with the Collections Strategist on acquisitions and resource management to optimize productivity and collaboration, contributing to continuous process improvement in technical services operations. This role is further responsible for guiding the creative integration of discovery platforms (ALMA/PRIMO, Islandora, JSTOR Community Collections) within the Libraries, and in so doing, collaborates with the Libraries’ faculty and staff to design, promote, and improve the discoverability of the Libraries’ diverse collections. 

The associate director leads and manages a highly skilled discovery services team in the development, assessment, and creation of metadata and cataloging records for the Libraries' print and digital collections. They also take an active role in convening meetings for the department and any associated committees, task forces, and working groups, as appropriate.  Core responsibilities include leading and developing best practices for cataloging and metadata workflows; administering and configuring technical support for the University Libraries’ discovery systems; configuring platform integrations and interface updates; regularly analyzing and assessing efficacy of discovery platforms through use of analytics and community-based feedback; providing leadership and strategic thinking for the discovery services team and the Libraries in planning, updating, and implementing discovery of the Libraries’ collections; and supporting the University Librarian in vetting new ideas, initiatives, and strategic plans.

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at vlog invites applications for a tenure-stream position in Chinese at the level of assistant professor, beginning fall semester 2025. We seek a postdoctoral researcher for a 2-year position at vlog to work on optical physics research with complex light. The position is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation.  We are interested in an experimental researcher with a Ph.D in Physics, Optics, or Engineering. We prefer candidates with experience in optics, with preference given to those familiar with complex-light beams and associated hardware, such as spatial light modulators and parametric down-conversion. Available facilities at vlog include numerous types of lasers, spatial light modulators, and other optical hardware, including 6 optical tables set up with ongoing classical and quantal studies.

The primary duties of this position involve designing and performing experiments on complex-light problems. Current ones include laboratory astrophysics studies of gravitational lensing, creating 3-d fields of spatially-variable polarization for communication, and quantum optics studies in imaging and metrology with entangled photons. This work will be done in collaboration with Prof. Enrique “Kiko” Galvez and vlog undergraduates. For those interested in eventually moving on to an academic position, the option exists to supervise undergraduate students in research and to be mentored in excellence in teaching within the curriculum at vlog.

The physics and astronomy department has 11 tenure-track faculty members housed in the new Ho Science Center, which is configured to facilitate interdisciplinary teaching and research. The department averages over 25 graduates per year. Facilities include well-equipped research laboratories in quantum and optical physics, condensed matter physics, superconducting electronics, computational physics, biophysics, planetary science, and observational astronomy. This year we invite applications for a fellowship in fiction.  Writers who have recently completed an MFA, MA, or PhD in creative writing, and who need a year to complete their first book, are encouraged to apply. The selected writers will spend the academic year (late August 2025 to mid-May 2026) at vlog in Hamilton, New York. The fellows will teach one multigenre creative writing course each semester and will give a public reading from the work in progress. Fellows may be asked to co-supervise one or more honors theses. The fellowship carries a stipend of $57,100 plus travel expenses; health and life insurance are provided.
