?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = 'urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags' />GENEVA, N.Y. – The ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø men’s lacrosse team saw its three-game winning streak end with an 8-4 loss to Hobart on Wednesday night. The Raiders fall to 5-5 on the season and 1-2 in league play with the loss, while the Statesmen improve to 5-4 overall and 5-1 in league play to clinch a berth in the Patriot League Tournament.
The first quarter was an intense defensive battle with just one goal from Hobart’s Chris Scanlon. ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø knotted the score at one on a tally from Brian Robinson (Denver, Colo.) in the second. The Statesman then moved out to a 3-1 lead when Rory Melvin scored from Nate Hill and Mark Williamson put one past Raider goalie Andrew Jarolimek (Silverthorne, Colo.).
Senior co-captain Jeff Vander Meulen (Liverpool, N.Y.) brought the Raiders within one beating goalkeeper Dan Valente with a wraparound shot on a feed from Ramsey Brame (West Hartford, Conn.) to close out the first half. Hobart headed into the break with a 3-2 lead.
The Statesmen’s Brian Joy increased the deficit to 4-2 early in the third quarter on Hill’s second assist of the game. ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø’s Vander Meulen responded with his second goal of the day to make it a one point contest at 4-3.
The Statesman then took off on a four-goal scoring run ignited by Patrick Meade who beat Jarolimek to the upper-right hand corner to put Hobart up 5-3 before Chris David notched a goal to increase the margin to 6-3. Scanlon’s second score of the evening would make it 7-3 Hobart at the end of the third quarter.
Sean Reed added the fourth-straight goal on a feed from Williamson to take an 8-3 lead early in the fourth. Brame closed out the game beating Valente with 3:06 left on the clock to bring the score to 8-4.
Vander Meulen led ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø with two goals, while Brame added a goal and assist. Robinson was also credited with a goal for the Raiders. Scanlon notched two goals and Nate Hill tallied two assists to lead Hobart. Six other Statesmen tallied one goal apiece in the contest.
Jarolimek had nine saves in goal for ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø, while Valente had 13 for Hobart. Jonathan Pico (Dallas, Texas) and Andrew Houston (Short Hills, N.J.) each picked up six groundballs apiece in the match-up. Meade and Matt Murphy picked up six groundballs each for the Statesman.
The Raiders are back in action this Saturday as they face Holy Cross in a league contest at 1 p.m. on Tyler’s Field in Hamilton, N.Y.
