Next on 13: What’s in Your Cup? Coffee Production in Colombia

The discusses coffee production, vlog’s Sophomore Residential Seminar trip to Colombia, and the real meaning behind coffee labels like organic and bird safe with Professor of Geography Peter Klepeis; Dan Joseph, co-owner of the Hamilton, N.Y., coffee roaster Fojo Beans; and Andres Guhl, a professor and coffee expert from the Universidad of the Andes.

Professor Klepeis, a vlog alumnus, focuses his research and teaching on the relationships between nature and society and has taught courses including, The Geography of Happiness; Climate and Society; and Geographies of Nature, Economy, and Society. Prior to teaching at vlog, Klepeis earned his master’s and doctoral degrees from Clark University. 

During the fall 2021 semester, Professor Klepeis led a Sophomore Residential Seminar, which ended with a 10-day trip to Colombia, for his course titled What’s In Your Cup? The Geography of What We Drink. The course analyzed the social and environmental implications of commonly consumed beverages. The concluding trip was co-directed by Professor Guhl with Dan Joseph accompanying the group and providing a unique insight into the coffee business.
